things from the outside world

this video has three of my favourite things; trees, fungi and efterklang (who i'm growing increasingly fond of).

Modern Drift by Efterklang from Rumraket on Vimeo.

the installations and paintings of hiro kurata

Interview with Malalai Joya on RAWA news.

a few little snippets;
"There is a superpower in the world besides the US government -- world public opinion."

"The Afghan government begs for funding from the international community in the name of its people, but the billions of dollars poured into the country are looted by warlords, drug lords, national and international NGOs and government officials. Much of it goes back into the pockets of the donor countries."

"Obama is making the world more unjust and insecure by waging new wars in Pakistan, Iran and Yemen, and also by increasing troops in Afghanistan. While billions of people around the world and inside the US are living in poverty, he is increasing the Pentagon's overall budget in fiscal 2011 to a record $708bn, which is ridiculous. Spent in the right way, this huge amount could ensure peace and prosperity around the world."

"Our people want democracy but now know that occupation will never bring democracy for them. Because democracy without independence has no meaning. When Afghan people raise their voice for independence, western forces call them "tribal" and "anti-democracy", while those barbaric warlords and Taliban who have accepted the US occupation and are in the parliament are called "democrats""

"We can change our destiny by our struggle and efforts."

more ink

have 20ish of these drawings so far (which are getting progressively unwood-like and unreferenced).

i might have to start thinking about what to do with them. always the most uncomfortable part of the process. surely it's enough they exist. anyway, newbies...

"nothing breeds exploitation like the death of the gifted"

i'm edging towards the large blank canvas in my other room. its been there for about 4 months, looking very oppressive after a winter of A5.

and also like Sarah Caterisano's, just for how she seems to draw and photograph everything.

woodenatomy

following friendly guidance, i drew some things lying around my desk last night. at least, it started out that way. unreality has a habit of taking over...

good things

I was pleasantly surprised to be informed i had been very kindly featured on Bree Walk's blog, Citrus Hearts. its a really nice site, lots of brilliant photos, and particularly like Christopher Bibby's and Jenny's paintings.

bree's own lovely photos can also be found on her Etsy page.

speaking of etsy, i had my first etsy sale this weekend! very exciting.

also must mention bibliOdyssey. there aren't enough hours in the day to go through its amazing collection of illustrations from old history and science books and magazines, with loads of info and background on the sources. there's such a wonderful genuine quality to the images. check it out.

images, found and made

more bits on paper scraps. i have more on flickr. this is all going somewhere i'm sure, i have a certainty in my brain that its just not letting me in on. these pages were left in containers with used painting water to soak up the paint as the water evaporates. much nicer than throwing it down the sink.

this may be my favourite image in the studio at the minute. i found it in the bin at home. i think a child drew it. possibly a niece or nephew.

these drawings are for a personal project (do i have impersonal projects?...). i like how they looked in the water. peaceful.

nitelings

another new one finished. will get it up on etsy soon.

the meaning of the ritual

don't know if that's what i'm calling it, but listening to the song (villagers) at the minute and seems fitting for the time being.

activities in this weeks studio

started another two pics after a wandering head delayed sleep. a little tree headed boy was creeping around my room last night, up to all notions of mischievous, no doubt. i set about at once to expose his conspirings and to find the meanings of his magics...

really wish my brain could focus on one thing at a time. paintings in the works;

and my to do list;

and i have it in my mind to at some point collate sums of the following assortment into a form or two of successive spined assemblage.

it'd be swell if someone paid me to do this stuff...or at least tell me what it is i'm doing...
